Primary Wetland Habitat

Urban and suburban habitats; water with high organic content; containers, temporary pools, sewer catch-basins, and wastewater lagoons.

Physical Identification Traits

Features broad white basal bands on the abdomen and coarser, grayish scales on the thorax compared to C. restuans.

Geographic Range

Northern United States and North Atlantic Coast.

Feeding Habits

Primarily feed on birds (maintenance/amplification of WNV); will also readily bite humans and mammals.

Life Cycle Type

Overwinters as mated females (resting adults).

Medical Importance

Main vector of West Nile virus (WNV); also associated with St. Louis Encephalitis (SLE) and EEE.
